A quick format in Windows writes a new, empty file system to the drive. On a hard drive, USB flash drive or SD card the old file contents usually stay in place until new data overwrites them, so recovery is often possible. On an SSD it usually is not. This guide covers drives formatted with File Explorer, Disk Management or format /q.

Why files can (or cannot) be recovered

  • Quick format only resets the file system. The old file table is replaced, so the drive looks empty, but the data clusters are not wiped.
  • A full format wipes the data. Since Windows Vista, a full (not quick) format writes zeros to the whole volume. After that, only backups help.
  • SSDs and TRIM. When you format an internal SSD, Windows tells the drive that all blocks are free (TRIM), and the SSD clears them. Microsoft notes that free space on an SSD is likely to be overwritten. USB sticks and SD cards usually do not get TRIM.
  • Every write reduces the chance. New files, a reinstall, even thumbnails and indexing can land on the clusters you want back.

Fix 1: Stop using the drive

  1. Do not copy anything to the formatted drive and do not install recovery software on it.
  2. If it is the drive Windows runs from, shut down and recover from another PC or connect the drive to another PC as a second drive.
  3. Do not run chkdsk or format it again "to fix it". Both write to the disk.
  4. Have a second drive ready with at least as much free space as the data you want back. Recovered files must go to a different drive.

Fix 2: Check backups and cloud copies first

A backup is faster and more complete than any scan.

Fix 3: Scan the drive with Windows File Recovery (Extensive mode)

Windows File Recovery (winfr) is Microsoft's free command-line tool for Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft recommends Extensive mode for a formatted disk; it supports NTFS, FAT and exFAT. Install it and run it as described in Recover deleted files with Windows File Recovery. For a formatted drive E: with recovered files saved to D::

winfr E: D: /extensive

To look only for certain file types, add filters:

winfr E: D: /extensive /n *.docx /n *.jpg /n *.pdf
  1. Run the command in an administrator Command Prompt and confirm with Y.
  2. Results are saved in a Recovery_<date and time> folder on the destination drive.
  3. After a format, original folder names and file names are often lost. Sort the results by type and date.

Fix 4: Rebuild the old file system with a partition recovery tool

If the drive was formatted to a different file system (for example FAT32 to NTFS or exFAT to NTFS), parts of the old file table may still be there. A partition recovery tool such as the open-source TestDisk can sometimes find the old volume and copy files out with their names and folders. Work from a disk image or copy files to another drive; do not write the repaired structure back until you have your files.

Fix 5: Use a data recovery lab

If the scans find nothing usable, the data is very valuable, or the drive also clicks, disconnects or reports errors, stop and take it to a professional recovery service. Every extra scan on a failing drive adds wear.

FAQ

Can I undo a quick format?

There is no undo command in Windows. You can only recover the files into another location, as above.

I quick formatted an SSD. Is there any chance?

Very little once TRIM has run, which happens immediately on most internal SSDs. Check backups and cloud copies first. An external SSD in a USB enclosure that does not pass TRIM may still be scannable.

Why are the recovered files named file001.jpg and similar?

The file table that held names and folders was replaced by the format. Signature-based recovery finds the contents but not the original names.
